This weekend, you’re allowed to venture and cozy up indoors. With Mexico receiving nine inches of snow, anything can happen.
The catch is, don’t stay home.
There are open-air holiday and seasonal events taking place, but the local theaters are packing the weekend with a variety of events to enjoy. With regard to horror films, costume contests, ghost tours, zombie crawls and dances, the Halloween pre-gaming will prepare you mentally for next weekend.
Let’s not forget: The SALT Awards are this weekend, and there are a variety of shows to see across Central New York. We listed a few, but check our website for more listings.

In some cases: In order to do something good, you have to be bad. The premiere of the upstate-made movie takes place at The Palace Theatre, kicking off a three-night horror extravaganza.

Lighting of the Vines
The intimate 1920s-themed night out — get dressed up in your best roaring threads — and three-course dinner returns for its second year at the local winery. The Syracuse Area Live Theatre (SALT) Awards are taking place this weekend, on Sunday. The votes have been tallied, so come and cheer on the winners of the Central New York performance art scene. Ticket purchase instructions are at the bottom of the page.

The Covey Theatre Company’s tale of murder returns to the historic mansion on James St. for six evenings and two Saturday matinees this month. Unfortunately, it’s the last performance the company will put on.
The matinees include a member-only talk with the director and cast. Last year’s performances sold out. This year’s have sold out as well.
As of this afternoon, one more show has been announced for Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m.

Stop down for the “kooky, not spooky” daytime Halloween-themed extravaganza. The annual Critz Farms autumn celebration concludes this weekend. There is an animal care area, pick your own pumpkins and apples, a cow train ride for kids, and plenty more. This year, the local grower has collaborated with Rosamond Gifford Zoo to raise awareness for the efforts of the organization. The eight-acre corn maze this year is “The Giant Zoo-Tastic Octopus’s Garden Corn Maze,” is featured on Critz’s website.
