New Vibes for Next Season At Syracuse Stage

Two and four. Four of Syracuse Stage’s productions for the 2011-2012 season will appear in the usual venue, the 499-seat Archbold Theater at 820 E. Genesee St. Two others, the season opener featuring a new adaptation of Henry James’ literary ghost story The Turn of the Screw.

April Showers. . .

. . . bring rain delays. The Syracuse Chiefs’ opening day on Wednesday, April 13, resulted in a complete washout with the game against the Pawtucket Red Sox made up the following day as part of a two-win doubleheader. The Chiefs are out of town the rest of this week, but return to Alliance Bank Stadium Tuesday, April 26, for an eight-day homestand.

The Pitch is Back

Opening Day for the Syracuse Chiefs baseball team is Wednesday, April 13, at 2 p.m., against the Pawtucket Red Sox at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, will play five home games this week: three against Pawtucket and a weekend series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

Arbor Days

With new sensitivity to environmental awareness all the rage, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County has re-formed its CommuniTree Steward program. Urban and Community Forest educator David Skeval revitalized the effort five weeks ago with encouraging success. The first training session is Wednesday, April 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. But don’t despair if you can’t make it this week. Skeval has plenty of work for folks who can’t commit to the four required classes.

As the symphony goes, so goes public radio? Not likely, said the folks behind the scenes of public broadcasting in Central New York. Still, listeners to the lower end of the FM dial can’t take for granted that we will always be able to tune in to talk (WRVO, 89.9), jazz (WAER, 88.3) or classical (WCNY, 91.3) any time we choose.

They literally tore the roof off the stage of the Landmark Theatre. Demolition crews, under the watchful eye of project manager Aaron Walter from local construction company Hueber-Breuer, removed the top of the theater about two months ago. A new roof will eventually be put into place to accommodate the new stage that is 12 feet taller.

Remembering Bill McDowell

During a five-day period this month, both Bill McDowell and Heather Sackett, long-time members of Syracuse arts and crafts community, died. Sackett created her sculptures for more than 20 years, while McDowell was a woodworker and a founding partner of Eureka Crafts in Armory Square.
