Hold a Candle

.
. . . . . .

Don’t be alarmed when paper bags filled
with candles line the streets of downtown Syracuse this week. It won’t
be a sign that an arsonist is on the loose, but rather that the Armory Square Candlelight Series
is primed to fill summer nights with music. The concerts, which run
every Saturday through Aug. 16 (with the exception of July 26), feature
a variety of local music groups performing on Franklin Street,
while downtown restaurants provide the food for outdoor, candle-lit
dining. Traffic will not be allowed in the area during days of the
events starting at 4 p.m. The first series will kick off on Saturday,
July 5, 6:30 p.m., when the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra will first welcome student musician and Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater Youth (SALTY) award-winner Lauren Sageer
as a special guest. The symphony will then perform Calvin Custer’s
arrangement of the National Anthem at 8 p.m., followed by arrangements
of selections from the Star Wars soundtracks. Admission is free. For more information, call 424-8200
