“Basically, the tour includes homeowners
who have donated their kitchen space during that time so the people on
the tour can see how others utilize their kitchen,” says Jonathen Bailey,
coordinator of the event and also a staffer at the WCC. “We are hoping
people can get some ideas for remodeling and see how certain
appliances, flooring and cabinets might be used in their own homes.
Every homeowner that has volunteered to show their kitchen has really
great insight about not only the history of their house, but the
history of the neighborhood it’s in”

According to Bailey, the WCC reaches
40,000 neighborhood residents, and many people outside of the area, and
some even its parameters, are unaware of that. “The initiative behind
this project is to raise awareness about the WCC to not just people in
the Westcott neighborhood, but to people across Syracuse,” continues
Bailey. “This is such a diverse and unique area of the city and it
resembles some parts of New York City with all of the different types
of people and distinct cultural influences here.”

Several neighborhood homes will be
opened up for the tour, and all of the homeowners are affiliated with
the WCC in one way or another. And the kitchens that are included on
the tour are just as heterogenous as the collective that makes up the
neighborhood. “Some of the kitchens are small and some are on a grander
scale and a little more extravagant,” he continues. “A few of the
kitchens have a retro feel to them, with even a couple having been
built in the 1920s, while some are completely updated with
top-of-the-line appliances.”

Daycare will be provided at the WCC for
people who want to enjoy the tour without having to keep a watchful eye
on the young ones. The cost for the tour is $20 and all sponsorship and
sales will benefit community programming provided by the WCC. For more
